Standard vs. Gamma Bucket Lids
TOOLS AND TECH

When it comes to storing and organizing items, bucket lids play a crucial role in keeping the contents secure and protected. Two popular options in the market are standard bucket lids and gamma bucket lids. In this article, we will discuss the differences between these two types of bucket lids and help you determine when to choose one over the other.
Both lids fit 5 gallon food grade buckets and are plastic, providing basic protection against dust, dirt, and pests.
Standard bucket lids are the more traditional option and come with a simple snap-on design. Gamma bucket lids feature a unique screw-on design that can be easier to open.
I made a <1 min video on these two lids here https://youtube.com/shorts/at1hQESMHvc
Expense - standard is less expensive
Ease of use - gamma seal can be easier to open
Cleaning - standard lids have less small grooves for food or dirt to get into, making them easier to clean
Rain / water proofness - your gamma seal lids need rain cover
Something not mentioned in the video is another con to gamma seals is if you have less of them it is harder to rotate them. For instance, I bought one gamma seal lid for each of my types of bulk food (hard white wheat berries, oat groats, kidney beans, etc.) and have two buckets of each type of food at a time, since I buy 50lb bags from Azure. When I'm done with the first bucket I have to pour the second bucket into the first bucket to continue to use the gamma seal, since the lids are not interchangeable, so I end up just using the standard lid and rotating the buckets.
Another tip I learned after making this video is to kneel with one knee in the center of the standard lid before pulling up.
There is also a tool you can use to pry it open but I only use that when they're really hard to open as you have to go find it first :) If you prefer the tool it may be worth having one near every location you may use buckets (I use mine for bulk grains I use on rotation for my pantry and for keeping animal feed outside, in multiple locations).
Which lid makes the most sense in your situation? Have you tried these or other lids on the market? Do you have a favorite brand? I have primarily used buckets and lids from home depot (both food grade and none food grade) as we are frequently there :)
